Cut The Cord

How I Threw That Box To The Curb And Saved$$$$

At the start of 2017, I decided I was done with cable.  My bill went from $99 monthly to $160 and that was with the fabulous “savings” from bundling. No extras either like HBO Showtime or sports packages. Basic cable channels lowest internet and the home phone. In this post, I will tell you how and why I ditched cable and how much I saved over a years time.

I already had Netflix and love streaming so I started looking into streaming devices and ended up purchasing two different brands. Both of which I like but the  Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote | Streaming Media Player is what I chose to stick with. Reasonably priced at $39.99 Also seems to be great entertainment for my grandchildren, they love talking to Alexa.

What About The Installation

I am not a techy person so the fact that installing the Firestick is super easy is another huge bonus in my book.  Step by step instructions;

  • First, connect the USB cable to the Firestick
  • Plug in the power adapter
  • Connect the Firestick to your T.V. Via a USB port
  • Turn your T.V. on and your device should be searching for the remote
  • Be sure to install the batteries in your remote
  • Next, connect to wifi and enter your password if needed
  • A screen will pop up and ask if you want to continue with the Amazon account associated with the Firestick or if you want to change it
  • Last a video introduction and how to use your Firestick! That simple

Amazon Prime

Next, I decided to enroll in the Amazon Prime Membership$99 for a year so my purchase of these 2 items was less than one month cable and the Prime is good for an entire year.  The Firestick will hopefully last much longer than a year, With that membership, you get unlimited streaming movies and T.V. shows, free 2-day delivery on orders plus music, books and more.

Amazon also has a plan for those who hold an EBT card. Affordable entertainment isn’t readily available and if you have children they want to watch T.V. movies, listen to music etc. and we all deserve that little break from reality now and then.  I think this is fabulous because the alternatives are quite costly and we all need to pinch pennies!

Ditched The Box UpGraded Internet

As I said previously I ditched cable, I did keep my internet and wifi through Spectrum as there aren’t many choices when you live in small town USA.  By small town, I mean population is around 1400. You know one of those towns where everyone literally knows everyone else one gas station a small town pharmacy a bar family diner and a Dollar General! Ok got off track for a second but I’m sure you get my point.

Highspeed internet with WiFi is only $60 a month-

  • 12 months of internet=720
  • 12 months Prime=$99
  • Firestick-39.99
  • 12 month total=$859
  • 12 months of cable=$1920
  • Savings of=$1061

Huge savings and money I was able to put toward paying off old medical bills which I accomplished thankfully. ( Because I now am racking up huge massive medical bills with health issues that snuck up on me in September) More on that here if you want to read about my journey over the last few months.

Do I Miss Cable?

Absolutely not one bit! Almost anything cable offers you can stream and most channels have free apps you can download. Which means all of your favorite shows are at your fingertips without emptying out your bank account.

Binge watching can become addictive so I will warn you now! I have found myself watching entire seasons in one day. As enjoyable as that is it’s not healthy or productive so I have to set limits for myself.

When we received our Firestick we went in and chose what our interests are. Prime then suggests shows or movies they think you may like based on those choices. I love these feature and the fact they email updates on new stuff every month so I never miss anything!

Free 2 Day Shipping

I don’t know about you but I do a lot of online shopping especially on Amazon. They have basically anything you need and knowing you will have it in 2 days time! For free you can’t beat that deal.

Birthdays and holidays I am so bad about last minute shopping so that 2-day shipping has saved me on more than one occasion!! Thank you, Amazon.

I Love Saving Money

I don’t know about you but I love saving money any way I can. Amazon Prime and Firestick made these savings a complete no-brainer and enjoyable!

If you are considering ditching cable this a great option to consider. Next priority for me is ditching high grocery bills! I have a 14-year-old boy who is a bottomless pit and eating me out of house and home! Hope these tips are useful.

Have A Blessed Day, Myla
